Post-Colonial Pasts and Neo-Imperial Presents

Prior to the 1944 Bretton Woods conference and the establishment of the GATT in 1947, precursors to the WTO, preferential arrangements excluded countries like the US from trade in the British and French colonial empires, a fact rarely taken into account in post-colonial theorising that purports to “re-read” the colonial past and its archives without accounting for its transposal, disrupted but hardly destroyed, into a neo-imperial present.
